Artwork Explanation
Vellamo is the goddess of the sea in the Finnish national epic Kalevala. She is described as a powerful and mysterious figure who rules over the waters and all their creatures. Vellamo lives in the depths of the sea together with her husband Ahti. She is often portrayed as both beautiful and frightening, with long hair and a strong connection to the movement of the waves. Fishermen and seafarers showed her respect, as she was believed to influence both the weather and the catch. If she was in a good mood, she could grant abundant fishing luck, but if she became angry, she could cause storms and dangers at sea.
